Matthew’s parents and grandparents
From Alan Rotherford’s late 1960’s research, though not all his tree is correct: Furthest back Matthew’s grand parents John and Isabel Anderson living at Clennel Mill in 1730s then Barrow Mill in 1758.
John and Isabels’ offspring probably:
- Eleanor b1731 m William Bollum of Stannington
- Elizabeth 1733-1758 b Alwinton
- Alex b1736
- Matthew 1739-1805 m at Alwinton in 1778 Eleanor Hunter of The Hillocks, Elsdon. Live at Shittleheaugh. Offspring included Archibald 1785- [who married Mary Clark and their daughter Mary Ann m. Ephraim the son of Matthew]
- Robert 1741-
- John 1743- OUR LINE
- Isabel 1745-
This is backed up by Wright-Wood ancestry tree. Offspring of John and Isabel:
- Eleanore 1731-
- Elizabeth 1733-
- **Alexander 1736-1810 Died Rothbury, m Mary Davidson then Alice Donkin. Daughter Alice 1771-1856 m James Elliot 1758-1849 who had one son and 4 daughters who married George Rutledge 1799-1875 and a Walker

Matthew’s siblings parents John 1743- and Margaret nee Hall
From 1920’s essay: Matthew’s parents John Anderson b 1743 and Margaret Hall.
From the 1867 will of Matthew’s brother Ephraim 1780-1867 bpt Harbottle m in 1807 Isabel(la) Richardson 1777- before 1861 census, no offspring in census records or in Ephraim’s will. Nephew and nieces mentioned. Ephraim lived at Silloans where John and Margaret Stokoe were living in 1851 before going to Ireland. Note Ephraim a widow when the will was written but some of his nephews and nieces could be Isabella’s. Also some will be great nieces and nephews. Description in will in italics
