Tom Golledge son of Mary A Talbott

Mary Ann Talbott married wheelwright William Golledge in Plumstead, Kent in 1853. On the marriage certificate Mary Ann’s residence is Sparkford. Their son was born in Woolwich and the daughters in Plumstead where William and Mary Ann lived until they returned to Sparkford sometime between the 1881 and 1891 censuses. In the 1871 census William, described as a blacksmith was in Portsea, Hampshire with another Woolwich blacksmith; no doubt working in the naval dockyards. 71 year old Mary Ann was buried in Sparkford in 1895.

At the time of the 1901 census widower William was living in Sparkford near his brother -in-law James Talbot. 63 yr old widow Ann Talbot Marks born Rimpton was William’s housekeeper. 79 year old William died in 1908 and was buried in Sparkford.

  • Thomas ‘Tom’ Golledge 1855-1938 was a pupil teacher by the time he was 16 and then schoolmaster in Shoreditch before moving to Lawhitton, Cornwall before the 1891 census and staying there until after 1911. No marriage. From sometime between 1881 and 1891 until he died Tom lived with his sister Alice until she died then continued to live in Parkstone, Dorset until he died at Pinewood Nursing Home. Probate to Vera Laura Alderman (wife of Ronald Henry Alderman) Effects just over £42. 83 year old Tom was buried in the same churchyard as his sister Alice.
  • Anna Golledge 1858-1916. After her parents returned to Sparkford Anna was a dressmaker then domestic servant living with the family of butcher Edward Gurney in Woolwich. No marriage, buried at Plumstead with two other people viewable on a subscription site.
  • Alice Golledge 1867-1929. After her parents returned to Sparkford Alice was with her brother Tom in Lawhitton, Cornwall. No marriage. Alice was living in Parkstone, Dorset when she died and was buried at nearby Branksome.

Golledge family

There were a number of Golledge families in the Castle Cary area of Somerset. William Golledge’s parents were Thomas Golledge born Ditcheat  c1786, labourer and Frances born Sparkford c1799. In 1851 William was living with his parents in Wellow.

In the 1911 census return for Tom and Alice includes their “cousin” 13 year old Margaret EL Rowden born in Holton, Somerset. In fact Margaret was their step cousin, daugther of their aunt Emily Abigail Talbott’s husband Henry Rowden by Henry’s first marriage.
