Introduction to the Talbott family

The Oram family oral tradition is that the Talbott family had lived in Over Stowey, a west Somerset village. After  blaming witchcraft for the death of their cattle they moved east about thirty miles to Sparkford.

In 2012 and 2018 we are inclined to question the ‘Over Stowey’ oral tradition as there are so many places with a similar sounding name.  In the 1851 census Philip Talbott, living in Sparkford, gave his place of birth as Stawell, Somerset.  Stawell is in an area prone to flooding just to the east of Bridgewater and about 15 miles to the west of Sparkford.  Stawell is a better candidate than Over Stowey, or the oral tradition could refer to another part of the family.

The first evidence of the Talbotts of Stawell in the Sparkford area of Somerset is when on 16 Sept 1789 William Talbot of Stawell married  Ann Humphries of and at Weston Bampfylde. Two years later on 07 Mar 1791 widower Thomas Talbot of Stawell married Mary Umphries [sic] of and at Weston Bampflyde. It was another five years before Elizabeth Humphries married Philip Talbott at Sparkford on 5 Sept 1796. Jane, the daughter of Philip and Elizabeth’s son Samuel married John Oram.

Unfortunately I cannot find a good record for the burials of Philip’s parents Thomas and Ann in Stawell or Sparkford.
