When Molly wrote the entries for her family for ‘The Family Oram Saga’ she gave no hints to the background of her husband William “Billy” Malone. Billy’s son Paddy and some internet research shows that:
At the time of the 1901 census 7 year old Billy was living in a “first class” farm house with 13 outbuildings at Ladystown, Rathvilly, Co Carlow with his parents, brother and 65 year old maternal grandmother Anne Arthur. Anne had been born in Co Wexford and Eva in Co Tipperary while Billy’s father William had been born in Co Carlow. Looking at the outbuildings return William kept pigs, cattle, fowl and a diary and had a stable for horses and a coach house.
Further internet research shows that Eva had been born 24 November 1866 at Cashel, Tipperary to John Arthur and Anne nee Clarke. William and Eva had married in 1890 at Baltinglass, the registration district that includes Ladystown. I, Carolyn can find no conclusive evidence for the names of William’s parents.
By the time of the 1911 census widow William had increased the number of stables and cow houses on the farm while 17 year old Billy was a pupil in Dublin. Was this the university?? William died early 1912 in the registration district of Baltinglass but I, Carolyn cannot find a record of Eva’s death.
Billy joined the Bank of Ireland in ….. [year ??] was at Westport with his sister and housekeeper Madge who was a friend of Molly Oram. Molly and Billy were married in Dublin in 1930.
