Wallace’s father William H Stewart was born in Michigan of American parents and his mother Lydia was born in New York of German parents.  In 1910, in the earliest census return traced for the family, they were living in or near Olean about 70 miles south of Buffalo, New York where William was a buyer of advertising apace for a medicine company.  In the New York State 1915 census the family were living at Portville near Olean and 23 year old Wallace was a student.  Wallace’s 1914-18 draft card, dated 5 June 1917 shows that he was a medical student at the University of Buffalo.

World War 1, Draft Card

In October 1922 Wallace, describing himself as a physician applied for a passport so that he could study in Europe, leaving on the USA on 9 November 1922.   He arrived back in New York on 3 October 1923 having travelled on the SS Majestic from Southampton, England.

Marriage to Prinnie Oram

In February 2013 no documentation could be found for their marriage, Prinnie’s divorce or a date of death for Prinnie’s first husband Joseph Stone.

In the 1930 census Wallace and Prinnie were living in Buffalo, New York where Wallace was a ‘surgeon in private practice’.  They both gave their ages as 38 years and stated that they were both 34 years old when they were ‘first’ married suggesting that they married in 1926.  Wallace had an entry in the 1933 Wellsville directory; Wellsville is about 30 miles east of Olean.  The 1940 census shows that in 1935 Wallace and Prinnie had been living in Queens, Long Island, New York but had returned to live in Buffalo City by 1940.  By then Wallace had ceased to be a surgeon and became an anaesthetist.   Wallace’s last entry as a physician in the Buffalo directories was in 1953.  Wallace predeceased Prinnie by seven months, see comment in Prinnie’s. Following their deaths Wallace and Prinnie were buried in unmarked graves in Mount View Cemetery, Olean where Wallace had lived as a child.
