Edith was the youngest child of Henry Sumner and Johanna O’Rourke. Henry had been born in Essex, England and emigrated to Australia in 1857 . He was a stockman and station manager at based at Newmerella, Snowy River then, between 1890 and 1902 a hotel keeper at Bremm River. Both these places are near the coast on the eastern side of the state of Victoria. When he died Henry was living at Thorpdale, Victoria, though he died in Sale Hospital. Thorpdale is near to Leongatha where Edith and James Puttock later lived.
Edith’s mother Johanna had been born in County Kerry, Ireland and by the time she married Henry Sumner on 29 April 1880 was living in Bairnsdale, Victoria. Johanna died in Korumburra, near Leongatha, Victoria.
