Two Durgetto sisters married into the Oram and Clark families in Cleveland Ohio in the late 1800s. Anna married William Clark and Josephine married Arthur Oram.
Please see the ‘Durgetto Family’ page for Josephine’s background and Arthur Oram 1872-1934 for more about Josephine’s husband. In the 1960s Arthur was remembered by his niece as “a gentle kindly ‘rover’ who loved liquor”. It seems as if Josephine was left as a single mum to bring up their daughter Nathalie so we telling what we have found out about their lives together on this page.
There are some questions around Josephine’s marriage to Arthur and if they were ever divorced. Our research notes are with their marriage licence docket.
In 1893 after their marriage and birth of their daughter Nathalie, Josephine and Arthur lived at 177 Dana Street in Cleveland. This was the home of Josephine’s eldest sister Anna, her husband William Clark and their son Arvin who had been born in 1884.
Arthur and Josephine never appeared in a census or directory entry together so we assume that they were in effect separated. In the 1900 census Josephine, a saleswoman in cloaks and Natalie were still living at 177 Dana Street. Ten years later in the 1910 census Josephine, now a saleswoman in dry goods and Natalie are living alone at an illegible address.
In 1908 Nathalie was attending the East High School, moving onto Western Reserve University by 1913 and then Ohio State University, Columbus in 1913-15.
Between 1912 and 1917 Josephine had a series of directory entries showing her as a clerk living at 9009 Hough Avenue. From the 1920 census onwards Josephine lived with her sister Mary or Marie. They both worked in dress shops, Josephine becoming a buyer and then a manager. In 1930 their great nephew William Clark was living with them after his parents had divorced. From 1935 to 1940, maybe longer they shared a home with divorced Arvin Clark and his daughter June. Arvin’s draft card shows that June’s husband joined them after their marriage in 1940.
Josephine rented a number of apartments including in 1920: 2077 E68th St, in 1922-6: 8820 Carnegie; in 1930: 2096 E 96th St and 1935-40: 1783 Eddy Road.
In 1919 Josephine’s daughter Nathalie married an attorney and was living in Akron, Ohio. At some stage Josephine moved to Akron where she died at ‘her home’ on 30 January 1964.
