Described in will of John Kingsley “Elder son” … “Peggy Kingsley his wife”
John bapt. 29 Apr 1781 in Pirton, Hertfordshire, England, died 5 July 1842 probably in Clophill, Beds (see 1841 census below) and buried in Pirton churchyard. Peggy nee Barber was also baptised and buried in Pirton. Links to John’s parents’ page and Peggy’s parents’ page.
Married Margaret “Peggy” Barber of Pirton on 9 September 1803 at the fashionable St George Hanover Square Church in London by licence. In the affidavit of the same day John Kingsley stated both were over 21 and he was living in the parish of St George Hanover Square. This was a lie as he was living in Pirton. In marriages by licence rather than banns the bridegroom’s residence is expected to be incorrect. Maybe they were not keen to be married by banns at their local church in Pirton as their first child was born less than two months later.
Life and census returns: looking at the birthplaces of their offspring it appears that John and Peggy lived in Pirton for a while before moving to the neighbouring village of Pegsdon in Bedforshire before 1816 and then onto North Minns before spending their retirement in Clophill. 1841 John and Peggy living in High Street, Clophill of independent means with Mary, Peggy and Anabella. 1851 Peggy, farmer’s widow at High Street, Clophill with unmarried daughters dressmakers Mary 35yr and Anabella 26 yr both born Pegsdon, Beds and unmarried son Joseph 24yr, butcher journeyman born North Mimms, Herts.
