Arthur Talbott Oram at Paddington Station, London 1869-1873
Entry in The Great Western Railway Company’s clerks register showing that Arthur at 16 years of age on 21 July 1869 entered the Passengers Department at Paddington. His starting salary was £20 rising to £30 in July 1870, £40 in July 1871 and £50 in July 1872. His ‘date and cause of leaving the Company’s service’ was “Resigned 11th July 1873”

The 1871 census shows Arthur lodging with labourer Robert Turner and his family at 6, Heath Cottages, Boston Road, Hanwell, about six miles west of Paddington. Arthur gave his birthplace as Blandford rather than Iwerne in Dorset (though these two towns are only about 6 miles apart) .
