Frances Turner was brought up in her father John Turner’s home village of Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire. Her mother was Mary, born in Gillingham, Dorset. In the 1851 census the family were living in Sand Street, Longbridge Deverill where John was a tailor. There were two changes by the 1861 census: the family lived at The Plough Inn, Sand Street and John was a ‘Tailor and Retailer of beer’.

Frances’ first marriage was to Henry Ernest Maxfield who has also been born in Longbridge Deverill. In the 1871 census they were running the Bath Arms Inn in Clay Street, Crockerton close to the Guppy’s home.
