1851 census states that 68 year old retired ironmonger James was born in Downton, Wiltshire. 1861 census just gives Wiltshire.
Only possible Downton C of E baptism is 23 February 1786 son of Edward and Sarah. An Edward Snelgar married Sarah Quinton on 24 April 1772 in Downton both ‘of this parish’ witnesses Wm Dove and George Quinton.
Edward and Sarah also had Sam and Sarah Snelgar baptised 20 Aug 1774,
Edward Snelgars were buried in Downton: 26 Nov 1775, 16 Nov 1783 (a pauper) and Edward Snelgar Sr buried 24 Oct 1783. NB all these dates after Edward and Sarah married and BEFORE James was baptised. Could just mean a rather late baptism.

An Edward Snelgar was baptised 7 October 1740 son of Edward and Elizabeth.
Sarah Snelgroves were buried 14 Jan 1828, 11 July 1822 born 1745, and widow and pauper buried 13 Sep 1800 born 1754.
BAPTISTS findmypast: 1754 Samuel Snelgar registered a Particular Baptist Meetinghouse in Downton. May explain late baptisms.
