Eliza’s early life

2018:  Eliza’s early life is a mystery all we know for certain is that on all her census returns she said she was born in Enfield, Middlesex and on her marriage certificate he father is given as ‘John Day, farmer’.

My research into census returns leads to Eliza being related to the Day family of Ickleford, just north of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. This large family includes John born 1792 and it makes sense that John would seek work in the parish of Enfield including part of the Lea Valley, a market garden area supplying London with vegetables. I suspect that John Day was an agricultural labourer rather than an independent farmer.
