Walter Burge was the son of baker Caleb Burge of Hazelbury Bryan in Dorset near the Somerset border. His baptismal name was Herbert William Burge but on his birth certificate he is Herbert Walter Burge.
Walter and his mother Bessie have two entries in the 1891 census. They are shown as living with Caleb in Hazelbury Bryan where Caleb employed two ‘servants’ in his bakery and one general servant. They are also with Bessie’s parents Walter and Eliza Mogg who ran a bakery and shop in Stalbridge, about 8 miles north of Hazelbury Bryan. Ten years later at the time of the 1901 census Walter was an 11 year old pupil at Stourpaine School to the north of Blandford Forum, Dorset. Presumably he went on to King Edward School, Bath as stated in Cissy’s entry when he was 13 years old.
Two years after their marriage in 1908 Walter and Cissy with their child Rita were living in Stalbridge where, in the 1911 census Walter described himself as a ‘bread baker and confectioner’. His parents are also in the village, Caleb described himself as a ‘master baker’. So it seems that Caleb had taken over his father-in-law Walter Mogg’s bakery business in Stalbridge.
There is no record of Walter enlisting for the 1914-1918 War but as a baker he would have been in an exempt occupation.
The family had moved to the Midlands by 1920 as Rita is recorded as dying in the Aston Registration District of Warwickshire. Aston is to the north east of the city of Birmingham. From 1922 to 1945 Walter and Cissy are included in the electoral register for Sparkbrook on the south eastern edge of the Birmingham conurbation. They lived at 46, Tillingham Street, Sparkbrook until Cissy died in 1947 when her probate record showed that Walter, then 58 years old was a chief postal clerk. The area has since been redeveloped and the street no longer exists.
A year later Walter married Florence Ellen Welch and when Walter died in 1965 they were living in Whoberley Avenue, Coventry, Warwickshire.
